How to Get Rid of a Couch in Hampton Roads
Most Hampton Roads cities pick up a couch with bulk collection — Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, Poquoson and York County all list furniture or sofas — and SPSA transfer stations take furniture free from Southside residents.
Each program has its own scheduling rules and limits, listed below. Or have it carried out and hauled away for you.

Curbside bulk pickup
- Norfolk
- Bulk Waste Collection covers household items and furniture. Schedule through MyNorfolk or (757) 664-6510 by 3 p.m. the day before your trash day; 12 pickups a year, 3 cubic yards each. Source
- Chesapeake
- Bulk Trash Collection takes furniture and patio furniture — one 4×4×10 ft pile a week, 12 collections a year. Source
- Suffolk
- Special Pick-Up takes furniture free, up to 12 a service year, no scheduling needed. Source
- Hampton
- Furniture and sofas go out with weekly bulk collection on your trash day. Source
- Newport News
- The Bulk Waste Program accepts furniture, up to 6 cubic yards per collection day. Source
- Williamsburg
- Household Bulk takes sofas and chairs by appointment — 2 large items per collection, 3 collections a year. Source
- Poquoson
- Bulk Item Pickup accepts furniture, with large items cut down to 4×4 ft. Source
- York County / Yorktown
- Sofas and chairs are on the bulk-collection list; subscribers get four free collections a year of up to three items. Source
- Franklin
- Up to four bulky items such as furniture, by appointment on Wednesdays (757-562-8564). Source
Drop it off yourself
- SPSA (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Franklin and Isle of Wight County)
- Furniture is accepted free as household waste at SPSA transfer stations (except Oceana, which is commercial-only), with proof of residency. SPSA limits residents to 12 free visits a year, with no limit at Franklin and Isle of Wight. Source
- Gloucester County
- Furniture can go to any of the county's five convenience centers. Source
- James City County (Williamsburg area)
- Furniture is 1 coupon ($4) at the county convenience centers. Source
Or have it hauled away
