How to Get Rid of a Refrigerator in Hampton Roads
In Hampton Roads a refrigerator can go out with city bulk pickup, but most programs want it prepared first — doors removed, emptied, and in Hampton the Freon removed by you or a certified contractor.
SPSA's transfer stations take small appliances only with a sticker certifying they're CFC-free; SPSA's Regional Landfill in Suffolk accepts appliances without a sticker.

Curbside bulk pickup
- Virginia Beach
- Refrigerators and freezers must be empty with all shelves and doors removed, and you note whether the Freon has been removed. Source
- Chesapeake
- Appliances are accepted with bulk trash — remove refrigerator and freezer doors first. Source
- Hampton
- Refrigerator doors must be removed, and all Freon and other refrigerants must be removed before collection by you or a certified contractor. Source
- Newport News
- Appliances need an appointment: call 757-933-2311. They're collected Wednesdays, limited to the first 28 callers. Source
- Norfolk
- Appliances go with Bulk Waste Collection and must be free of trash and debris. Source
- Suffolk
- Special Pick-Up takes appliances free, up to 12 a service year. Source
- Williamsburg
- Refrigerators and washers/dryers are allowed on Household Bulk, by appointment. Source
- York County / Yorktown
- Refrigerators and freezers must be empty; subscribers get four free bulk collections a year. Source
- Poquoson
- Appliances are accepted with the monthly Bulk Item Pickup. Source
- Franklin
- Up to four bulky items such as appliances, by appointment on Wednesdays. Source
Drop it off yourself
- SPSA (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Franklin and Isle of Wight County)
- SPSA accepts small appliances that have a sticker certifying they're free of CFCs at its transfer stations (except Oceana). The Regional Landfill in Suffolk accepts appliances without certification stickers. Source
- Virginia Beach
- The city's household hazardous waste site accepts appliances containing Freon, and the Resource Recovery Center takes metals and appliances. Source
- James City County (Williamsburg area)
- Refrigerators, washers and dryers are no charge at the county convenience centers. Source
- Gloucester County
- Household appliances can go to the county's convenience centers. Source
