How to Get Rid of a Mattress in Hampton Roads
In Hampton Roads you can get rid of a mattress through your city's bulk pickup — Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, Poquoson and York County all take mattresses at the curb — or by dropping it at a transfer station or convenience center.
Rules, limits and fees differ by city, so find yours below. If you'd rather not move it at all, a paid haul-away is the third option.

Curbside bulk pickup
- Chesapeake
- Bulk Trash Collection takes mattresses and box springs — one 4×4×10 ft pile a week, 12 collections a year. Call 757-382-2489 by 5 p.m. the workday before, or request online. Source
- Suffolk
- Special Pick-Up takes mattresses. It's free, up to 12 a service year, and doesn't need scheduling. Source
- Hampton
- Bulk waste — including mattresses — is collected weekly on your trash day, no appointment needed. Source
- Newport News
- The Bulk Waste Program accepts mattresses, up to 6 cubic yards per collection day. Source
- Williamsburg
- Household Bulk allows mattresses by appointment: 2 large items per collection, 3 collections a year (757-220-6140). Source
- Poquoson
- Bulk Item Pickup accepts mattresses — one curbside pickup a month on your precinct's Tuesday. Source
- York County / Yorktown
- A mattress and box spring count as one item. Garbage subscribers get four free collections a year of up to three items; otherwise it's $30 for up to three. Source
- Norfolk
- Bulk Waste Collection is scheduled by 3 p.m. the day before your trash day (12 a year, 3 cubic yards each). The city's disposal page links a separate mattress guide. Source
- Virginia Beach
- Bulky/Large Item Pickup asks that beds be disassembled; request it at least three days before your trash day. Source
Drop it off yourself
- SPSA (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Franklin and Isle of Wight County)
- SPSA transfer stations (except Oceana, which is commercial-only) accept mattresses and furniture free as household waste with proof of residency. SPSA limits residents to 12 free visits a year, with no limit at the Franklin and Isle of Wight stations. Source
- York County
- At the county transfer station, non-subscribers pay $33 per mattress and $33 per box spring. Source
- James City County (Williamsburg area)
- Convenience-center coupons are $4 each: a twin mattress or box spring is 1 coupon, a full is 2, and a king or queen is 3. Source
