How to Get Rid of Old Carpet in Hampton Roads
Old carpet is handled differently across Hampton Roads: Norfolk and York County take rolled carpet and Suffolk takes carpet with bulk pickup (with limits), while Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Poquoson don't take installed carpet at the curb.
Where it isn't collected, it goes out as remodeling debris — to a transfer station, convenience center or landfill. Find your city below.

Curbside bulk pickup
- Norfolk
- Carpet (rolled) and padding are on the scheduled bulk-waste list, up to 3 cubic yards per pickup; charges may apply above that. Source
- Suffolk
- The city's Waste Wizard lists carpet and underpadding for curbside bulk pickup on your regular trash day — no need to call. Source
- York County / Yorktown
- Carpet is accepted on bulk collection: up to 6 rolls, 6 ft long and no more than 75 lb each, rolled and taped or tied. It counts as one full bulk pickup. Source
- Virginia Beach
- Carpet and building or renovation materials aren't eligible for bulky pickup. Area rugs up to 9×12 ft, rolled and secured, are accepted. Source
- Chesapeake
- Carpet isn't collected with bulk trash. Debris from a homeowner's own remodeling can go to any SPSA transfer station or the SPSA landfill in Suffolk. Source
- Poquoson
- Area rugs are accepted with bulk pickup, but installed carpet and flooring are not. Source
Drop it off or haul it as remodeling debris
- Gloucester County
- The county's Waste Wizard says to put carpet in the trash at a drop-off convenience center. Source
- York County
- Garbage subscribers can bring construction debris to the county transfer station free; others pay $70.10 per ton. Source
- Newport News
- Debris from a resident's own remodeling goes with bulk pickup only with a displayed building permit, up to 6 cubic yards. Source
- Hampton
- Building materials aren't collected at the curb. With a city building permit, residents can take them to the landfill. Source
- James City County (Williamsburg area)
- Construction-debris loads cost 3 to 5 coupons ($4 each) at the county convenience centers. Source
